India (Assam): Mana Organics Rainwater Harvesting Team
The Mana Organics group is designing a rainwater catchment and irrigation system for tea farmers in Assam, India who are experiencing periods of drought in the winter months. This drought can be detrimental to the tea crops, and we are aiming to store rainwater from monsoon season to irrigate the crops when water is scarce. Our design process will include brainstorming, consulting experts in irrigation, technical and economic analysis, and AutoCAD design. During the research stage, one of our team members will travel to India to gain a sense of the physical characteristics of the farmland, local resources, and local opinion. Our work will culminate in a blueprint water catchment and irrigation system as well as an accompanying business model rollout plan. The team consists of five graduate students at UC Berkeley, who bring expertise in business model development and engineering to the project.
