India (Bihar): Humanure Power Design Team
Six hundred fifty million people defecate outdoors daily in India. Humanure Power (HP) was founded in 2011 to address this issue in Bihar, India where the annual average income for a family of seven is $400. HP successfully developed community toilet blocks for densely populated areas. However, in remote villages of Bihar individual households latrines are more appropriate. The client requested that Humanure Power Design Team (HPDT) design a household toilet for rural Bihar. The HPDT design will need to be compatible with the local culture, easy to maintain, integrate locally available materials, and cost less than Rs 12,000. Team members Alper and Vigny have experience with construction management and design while Erica, Kerri, and Elisa have a strong background in water quality and sanitation engineering. HPDT will review existing literature, survey the target population, and prototype designs to identify the optimal solution.
